Save vs. Splurge: Designing A Bedroom
When decorating a bedroom, it can be hard to decide where to splurge and where to save. The Angela Neel design team shared their suggestions below for a luxe, comfortable bedroom that doesn’t break the bank.
Bedding, Sheets, and Pillows – SPLURGE
If you’re going to spend one-third of your life in bed, you should be sleeping on the best! We feel very strongly about this and always encourage our clients to invest in the very best linens they can afford. Getting a good night’s sleep is an investment in your health, and good health is priceless. High-quality linens also last for years and get softer with every wash.
Mattress – SPLURGE
For the same reasons we suggest splurging on high-quality bedding, we also recommend investing in a good mattress. Mattresses last for at least 10 years and play a critical role in your comfort and well-being. Consider the cost-per-sleep when setting a budget for your mattress.
Dresser or Nightstand – SAVE
It’s not easy but it is possible to source designer-quality furnishings that elevate your space at a reasonable price. If budget is a concern, this is one place where it’s usually safe to save.
Window Treatments – SPLURGE OR SAVE
This one can go either way! While nothing off-the-shelf compares to the beauty and craftsmanship of custom draperies, we occasionally source lower-priced options when appropriate. If the curtains aren’t a focal point, this is a place where it may be ok to opt for a less expensive solution.
Lighting – SAVE
It’s easy to get a lot of bang for your buck with affordable lighting. This is an ideal place to save, especially in a bedroom where lighting tends to be smaller scale.
Our basic rule of thumb is – if it touches your body or gets used multiple times per day, buy the best you can afford. Thinking of redesigning your bedroom? We can help.
